A Friday Thai Pongal is the expensive kind. Everyone travels home on Wednesday night and Thursday, Kaanum Pongal lands on a Sunday so the beach, the zoo and the cinema will be at capacity, and the Pongal bonus lands in the same week the shopping does. This guide is about enjoying all four days — the paanai boiling over, the kolam, the sugarcane, the cousins — and starting February with the money you meant to keep.

Setting Your Pongal Budget

Decide the number before the Pongal bonus arrives, not after:

1. Split the bonus on the day it lands. Most private employers in Tamil Nadu pay a Pongal bonus or advance in the first or second week of January. Decide the festival share in advance — a third, a half, whatever you can defend — and move the rest to savings or the EMI before it feels like spending money.
2. Separate "before Bhogi" from "the four days". Clothes, the new paanai, travel tickets and gifts for elders are settled in advance. Sugarcane, flowers, turmeric plants, the Kaanum Pongal outing and the meals out happen day by day — give those a per-day amount.
3. Set a per-person clothing cap. Pongal clothes are the biggest line for almost every family — new vesti, saree or pavadai for everyone, bought at Ranganathan Street, Pondy Bazaar or the district's textile street in the week before. A cap per person, agreed before the shop, is what keeps it sane.
4. Keep a 10–15% buffer. A relative who arrives with children, a cab surge on Kaanum Pongal evening, the sugarcane that doubled in price on the 14th — the buffer absorbs it.

Where the Money Goes

New clothes

The Pongal sale season starts right after New Year, and the textile streets are at their most crowded — and least negotiable — on 12 and 13 January. Shop in the first week of January for better stock, or buy the children's clothes in the December end-of-season sales and keep them aside. Two new outfits per person, not four, and the Thai Pongal outfit is the one to spend on.

The paanai, the sugarcane and the puja

A new clay or brass pot for the pongal, a bundle of sugarcane, turmeric and ginger plants tied to the pot, banana leaves, flowers for the kolam and the puja — small items, but bought on the 14th they cost twice what they cost on the 11th. Sugarcane in particular spikes on Bhogi evening; buy it a couple of days early and keep it in the shade.

Bhogi

Bhogi is the day the old goes out and the new comes in, and that is where the quiet overspend lives: "we need a new mixie anyway", "the mattress is old", "let's replace the curtains for Pongal". Decide one or two genuine replacements and log them as household purchases, not festival spending, so they show up honestly in February.

The Pongal meals

Sakkarai pongal, ven pongal, the full elai sapadu on Thai Pongal, the extended family on Kaanum Pongal — the grocery bill for the four days is real but predictable. Buy the rice, jaggery, ghee and cashews in the week before at normal prices; only the vegetables and banana leaves need to be bought fresh.

Mattu Pongal

In the villages this is the day the cattle are washed, painted and garlanded, with a contribution to the village's celebration; in the city it is often a temple visit and a contribution to a gaushala. Either way, decide the amount before the day.

Kaanum Pongal

The Marina, Elliot's Beach, Vandalur Zoo, the film that released for Pongal, the family lunch out — Kaanum Pongal is the day the money moves fastest, and a Sunday Kaanum Pongal in 2027 means every one of those will be full and priced accordingly. Set the outing budget the night before and pay for the tickets in advance where you can.

Gifts and travel

Cash for the elders' blessing, a small amount for the house help, the watchman and the milkman, and the trip home — the bus and train tickets for Wednesday 13 January sell out first. Book the day the holidays are confirmed.
