Secondary Currency
Secondary Currency lets you see every amount in your app displayed in two currencies simultaneously — your primary currency and one additional currency of your choice. The converted amount appears below each transaction, on totals, and in reports.
This is ideal if you live abroad and want to mentally reference prices back home, if you travel frequently and want to track spending in both local and home currency, or if you send money between countries and want to keep tabs on the exchange rate impact.
Exchange rates update automatically once daily using real-time market data. The conversion is display-only — your actual transaction amounts are always stored in your primary currency. You can change or disable the secondary currency at any time without affecting your data.
How to set up a secondary currency
- Open Pocket Clear and tap Settings (gear icon).
- Tap Secondary Currency.
- Search or scroll to find your desired second currency and tap to select it.
- Converted amounts will now appear throughout the app alongside your primary currency.
How exchange rates work
- Rates are fetched once per day from a reliable market data source.
- The rate used is the mid-market rate (no markup).
- Historical transactions show the conversion using the current exchange rate, not the rate from the date of the transaction.
- To disable secondary currency, go back to Settings and tap Remove.
Entering an amount in your secondary currency
Secondary Currency normally works one way: you type in your primary currency, and Pocket Clear shows you the second-currency equivalent. Pro users can also turn that around and type the amount in the secondary currency — useful if you live in one country and are paid in another, or if half your receipts come in a currency that isn't your primary one.
Turning it on
- Set a secondary currency first, using the steps above.
- Go to Settings and turn on Allow entry in secondary currency, just under the Secondary Currency row.
- Open Add Transaction. A small two-button switch appears under the amount, showing your two currency codes. Tap either one to choose which currency the amount field is accepting.
What gets saved
The transaction is converted and saved in your primary currency, exactly like every other transaction in your account. Pocket Clear stores one currency and one only — so your totals, budgets, reports, widgets, exports and any shared partner figures keep working with no adjustment, and nothing needs to be set up on your partner's device.
Because only the converted amount is kept, the figure you originally typed is not recoverable afterwards. That is why the line under the amount field shows both the converted result and how old the exchange rate is before you save — it is the check to read.
Offline, and how old the rate can be
Pocket Clear keeps the latest exchange rate on your device for 48 hours, and refreshes it whenever you have a connection. So the currency switch keeps working on a plane, on a train, or anywhere your phone has no signal — which is exactly when you most want to log the thing you just paid for. The line under the amount field always tells you how old the rate it used is, so you can see at a glance whether you're converting at this morning's rate or yesterday's.
If Pocket Clear has no stored rate at all — a brand-new secondary currency set while you were already offline, or a rate more than two days old — it will say so under the amount field and ask you to connect once to fetch one. It will not guess. Until then you can still log the expense by tapping your primary currency on the switch and entering the amount that way.
When the switch doesn't appear
The currency switch is hidden unless all of the following are true:
- You're on Pocket Clear Pro.
- A secondary currency is set.
- Allow entry in secondary currency is on in Settings.
A missing exchange rate does not hide the switch — you'll get the message described above instead.
Which currency is selected when you open the screen
Pocket Clear remembers the currency you last entered in for 24 hours, so a run of purchases abroad costs one tap rather than one tap each. After 24 hours the amount field goes back to your primary currency on its own — a coffee logged in euros last week won't quietly preselect euros today.
Turning on Travel Mode also sets that preselection to your travel currency, which is how Travel Mode does its job now: it's one of the things that picks the entry currency for you, not a separate mode with its own rules.
