The Trade Behind "AI-Powered"
The AI budgeting app roundups of 2026 — Rocket Money's, Money Crashers', Bankrate's, CNBC's — list the same names: Copilot, Cleo, Monarch, Rocket Money, and lately Finny. What none of them say plainly is where the AI runs. It matters, because an AI that categorises your transactions needs your transactions, and an AI that reads your receipt needs your receipt. If the model lives on a server, so does your data.
For a bank-linked app that is not a change: your accounts are already mirrored on their servers, so the AI simply runs there too. For a manual-entry app that sells "AI input", the model is the moment your data leaves the phone — unless it runs on the phone. This comparison is about that one question, plus the usual ones: bank linking, platforms, couples, price.
The Comparison
Each row is taken from the product's own website on 24 September 2026. Where a site does not say something, the table says so rather than guessing.
| App | What the AI does | Bank linking | Where the AI runs | Platforms | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pocket Clear | Capture: receipts, bank messages and emails become expenses. Ask: exact answers from your ledger | Never | On your phone (Apple Foundation Models, Gemini Nano, or a rules parser); nothing uploaded, no cloud fallback | iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, Chromebook | Free forever; AI free until 31 Dec 2026, then Pro ($4.99/mo or $34.99/yr) |
| Copilot Money | "Learns your spending patterns and tags every transaction automatically"; personalised recommendations | Required for full use | Their servers (your linked accounts are there) | Web, iPhone, Mac, iPad — no Android | $95/yr ($7.92/mo billed yearly) |
| Cleo | Chat assistant that talks about your money | Required | Their servers | iPhone, Android | Free tier; paid tiers |
| Monarch | Assistant over your linked accounts and budgets | Required | Their servers | Web, iPhone, Android | $99.99/yr |
| Finny | "Type naturally", voice, or scan up to 5 receipts; "the AI extracts the details, and you review before saving" | Never — "AI input replaces bank syncing" | "All data stays on your device by default"; AI input is a credit-metered Pro feature and the site does not say the model runs on the phone | iPhone only | Free core; AI on Pro ($3.49/mo or $24.99/yr on the US App Store) |
App by App
Copilot Money
The most polished bank-linked app on iPhone and Mac, and its AI is genuinely useful: it learns how you categorise and does it for you. It needs your accounts connected to do that, so everything it knows lives on Copilot's servers — which is the design, not a flaw. Still no Android in 2026, and no free plan beyond the trial.
Cleo
A chat-first assistant with a personality, aimed at people who want to be talked to about money. It links your bank and reasons over the result on Cleo's side. Good at nudges; not a place your data stays private.
Monarch
The full household-finance dashboard — accounts, investments, budgets — with an assistant layered on top of the linked data. Strong for couples who want one shared view of everything; by construction, that view is hosted.
Finny
The closest to Pocket Clear in spirit: manual entry, no bank linking, data on the device by default, and AI to remove the typing. Two differences matter. Finny's AI input is a paid, per-credit feature, and its site does not say the model runs on the phone. And it is iPhone-only, with no shared tracking for couples.
Pocket Clear
Capture and Ask run on the phone — Apple's on-device models on iPhone 15 Pro and later with Apple Intelligence, Gemini Nano on Android phones that have it, and a rules parser for bank SMS everywhere else. There is no cloud fallback: if the phone can't read it, you get the normal form. Both are opt-in, off by default, free for everyone until the end of 2026, and available on iPhone and Android, with Partner Mode for couples.
Five Questions to Ask Any AI Money App
- Where does the model run? If the answer is not "on your phone", your receipt or message is being sent somewhere. That is fine if you know it; it should not be a surprise.
- Is there a cloud fallback? Some "on-device" features quietly ship the hard cases to a server. Ask.
- Does it need bank linking to work? If yes, the privacy question is already answered — your accounts are on their servers.
- Is your data used to train the model? Look for a plain statement, not a "we may use data to improve our services" clause.
- Does the AI do arithmetic? A language model that adds up your spending will sometimes be wrong. An app that computes totals from the ledger and uses the model only to understand the question will not.
How Pocket Clear Does It
Capture reads what you hand it. Share a bank SMS, a card alert or an order email, paste a line of text, or photograph a receipt, and it becomes an expense with the amount, merchant, date and category filled in for you to confirm. Ask answers five kinds of question exactly — totals, comparisons, top lists, lookups, budget checks — by turning your question into a query and running it against the database on your phone; the model never adds numbers. Open-ended questions get a short on-device answer with every figure checked against your data first.
Nothing about a capture or a question reaches Pocket Clear or any AI provider, and nothing is used to train anything. The transaction you confirm is saved like any other and leaves the phone only if you have Pro Cloud Sync on. Both features live behind one opt-in switch on the On-Device AI tab, marked Beta. The on-device AI page has the details, and Why on-device AI explains the reasoning.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Pocket Clear's AI send my receipts or bank messages anywhere?
No. Capture reads the message, receipt or email on your phone — Apple's on-device Foundation Models on an iPhone 15 Pro or later with Apple Intelligence on, Gemini Nano on an Android phone that has it, and a built-in rules parser everywhere else. Nothing about the capture is uploaded to Pocket Clear or to any AI provider. The expense you confirm is saved like any other transaction and only leaves the phone if you have Pro Cloud Sync switched on.
What can I ask?
Ask answers from your own ledger, on your phone: totals ("how much on food this month?"), comparisons ("am I spending more than last month?"), top lists ("biggest merchant this year?"), lookups ("when did I last pay Uber?") and budget checks. Those come back exact — the number is computed from your transactions, never guessed by a model. Open-ended questions get a short on-device answer with every number checked against your data first.
Is on-device AI on by default?
No. Both Capture and Ask sit behind one opt-in switch on the On-Device AI tab, marked Beta, and are off until you turn them on. The app is a complete expense tracker without them.
Is it free?
Yes, for everyone until 31 December 2026; after that it becomes part of Pro. Running the model on the phone has no per-use cost, which is what makes that possible.
Does it link to my bank?
Never. Pocket Clear has no bank linking and no aggregator. Capture reads what you hand it — a message you share, a receipt you photograph, a line you type — and turns it into a transaction you confirm.
