Ask Claude or ChatGPT About Your Spending

October 2026 · 5 min read

People have been pasting bank statements into ChatGPT for a while now. I understand why. "Where did my money go?" is a question, not a chart, and an assistant is good at questions.

The statement is the problem. Account numbers, balances, every line of a month, pasted into a chat once and never taken back.

In 2.18 there's a cleaner way. Pocket Clear can hand your AI assistant a read-only key to your spending. You create it, you can see when it's used, and you can switch it off with one tap.

How it works

  1. Open Settings → Connect an AI assistant, or tap Connect AI beside Quick Log on Home. On the web, it's at the top of web.pocketclear.app.
  2. Choose how long the token lasts: 30, 90 or 365 days. 90 is the default.
  3. Tap Create, then Copy prompt.
  4. Paste the prompt into a new chat in Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot or Perplexity. Then ask.

The prompt carries your token (it starts with pcai_), a link to the reference the assistant reads first, and a first question to get it going. There's nothing to set up inside the assistant.

The token is shown once. Pocket Clear keeps only a fingerprint of it, so even we can't show it to you again.

What you can ask

The assistant doesn't guess the totals. It fetches them from Pocket Clear, which works them out with the same maths as the app: refunds net against the category they refund, transfers between your own accounts aren't spending, and budgets use the period you set. The assistant's job is the part it's good at, explaining, comparing and drawing the chart.

Read-only, and only what you choose

What the assistant can read: amounts, dates, categories and subcategories, payees, payment types, tags, budgets, savings goals and account balances.

See it, revoke it

Every token you've made sits in a list under Connect an AI assistant, with its last four characters, when it expires, and when it was last used, including the country the request came from. "Never used" means no assistant has read anything with it yet.

Tap Revoke and the token stops working straight away, for every chat that has it. You can keep up to five at once, one per assistant if you like, and each expires on its own date. Using a token doesn't extend it.

Treat the prompt like a password. Anyone who has it can read your synced spending until it expires or you revoke it.

Why it's part of Pro

The assistant reads the copy of your data that Cloud Sync keeps on our server, encrypted with AES-256. On the free plan your data never leaves your phone, so there's nothing for an assistant to read. Connect an AI assistant needs Pro with Cloud Sync on.

If you'd rather nothing leaves the phone at all, Ask on the On-Device AI tab answers exact questions about your spending on the phone itself. Two tools, two different choices about where the answer is worked out.

Open-source models, Claude Code, Cursor and other MCP clients

Pocket Clear also runs a read-only MCP server with the same data as tools, using the same token. Claude Code, Cursor and any other client that supports remote MCP servers can use it.

That includes open models you run yourself. Desktop apps such as LM Studio and Jan run Llama, Qwen, DeepSeek, Mistral, Gemma or gpt-oss on your own computer and can connect to MCP servers, so the model reads your spending through the same read-only token and the answer is written on your machine, not in someone else's chat history.

The setup, the full endpoint reference and the OpenAPI file are on the developer page.

Step-by-step help, including what to do if your assistant can't open web links, is in the help centre: Connect an AI assistant.

Questions

Can an AI assistant change or delete my transactions?

No. The connection is read-only. Every request is a read, and there is no way to add, edit or delete anything through it.

Which assistants work with Pocket Clear?

Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, or any assistant that can open web links. If yours can't browse, open the link in the prompt yourself and paste what it shows into the chat. Claude Code, Cursor and other MCP clients can use the read-only MCP server, and so can desktop apps that run open models such as Llama, Qwen, DeepSeek, Mistral, Gemma or gpt-oss, like LM Studio or Jan.

Does it work on the free plan?

No. The assistant reads the copy of your data that Cloud Sync keeps, and on the free plan your data never leaves your phone. Connect an AI assistant needs Pro with Cloud Sync on.

How do I stop an assistant reading my data?

Open Settings, then Connect an AI assistant, and tap Revoke next to the token. It stops working immediately. Every token also expires on its own after 30, 90 or 365 days.

Can the assistant see my partner's spending?

No. In Partner Mode a token reads only your own transactions, including ones your partner logged for you. Your partner's own transactions are never shared.

Ask Your Own Numbers

Track your spending in two taps, turn on Cloud Sync, and connect the assistant you already use.
