Payees
Payees let you track who a transaction was with — a landlord, a specific store, a coworker you split a bill with — separate from the category (which tracks what you spent on) and the payment type (which tracks how you paid). Instead of only knowing you spent on Bills this month, you can see exactly how much of that went to your landlord versus your electricity provider.
Payees are opt-in and need to be enabled in Settings before they appear anywhere in the app. They're a Pro feature.
Once enabled, a Payee field shows up on the Add/Edit Transaction screen. Tap it and your existing payees drop down straight away, most-used first, so repeat entries — the same landlord, the same store — take one tap instead of retyping a name every time. Typing filters the list, and typing a brand-new name creates a payee on the spot.
Pocket Clear does not ship a starter list of payees, because useful ones are personal to you — your landlord, your regular shops. The first time you open the field it will be empty, and the payee you type becomes the first entry in it.
Payees stay private to you. A partner never sees yours in their own picker, even in combined view.
How to use payees
- Go to Settings > Payees and toggle payees on.
- When adding or editing a transaction, you'll now see a Payee field.
- Tap the field to see the payees you've used before, most-used first — or type a new name to create one.
- Tap Save. The payee is attached to that transaction.
Managing payees
Open Settings > Payees > Manage Payees to see every payee you've used, with a count of transactions for each.
- Rename a payee and every transaction that used it shows the new name.
- Merge two or more payees into one — useful if you ended up with "Trader Joe's" and "Trader Joes" as separate entries. Select the payees to merge and choose which one to keep; Pocket Clear tells you exactly how many transactions will move before you confirm. This moves those transactions permanently, so check the count before confirming.
- Delete a payee to remove it from the picker. This is safe: it does not touch your history. Every transaction that used it keeps that payee's name and still appears in Reports — deleting only means the name won't be offered as a suggestion going forward.
Top Payees in Reports
Reports includes a Top Payees breakdown showing where your money actually goes, payee by payee. If you use Partner Mode, Top Payees in the combined view always shows your own spending only, never your partner's. That's because payees aren't shared between partners — you and your partner each keep your own separate payee list, the same way you each keep your own device. This is how the feature is meant to work, not a syncing gap.
Finding a payee's transactions
All Transactions search matches your notes, category, amount, and payee name, so searching a payee's name surfaces everything you've logged for them. Search itself is free for everyone on both iOS and Android, whether or not you have Payees turned on.
