The hard part of tracking money abroad isn't the spending. It's the arithmetic. At home, logging a coffee is "type the number, save". Abroad, a step gets wedged in the middle: work out what 4.20 euros or 180 baht is in your own money. That step is slow and error-prone, and it's usually why people stop logging by day three of a trip.

The third approach wins because it splits the work properly. You copy a number from a receipt, which people are good at. The software does the conversion, which people are bad at, especially standing at a counter.
How it works in Pocket Clear: Travel Mode
Travel Mode is a Pro feature. You pick the country's currency once, and the Add Transaction amount field starts accepting it:
- You type what the receipt says. A live "≈ home currency" line under the amount shows what will be saved and how old the exchange rate is.
- It saves in your home currency. Every transaction is stored in one currency, so your reports, budgets and history at home need no "travel" adjustment.

No signal? It still converts, with one caveat
Turning on Travel Mode stores the current exchange rate on your phone. Pocket Clear keeps it for 48 hours and refreshes it whenever you're online. That covers the flight out and a day without roaming. The caveat: if there's no stored rate at all, or it's more than two days old, the app says so and asks you to connect once. It won't guess. Until then you can log the expense in your home currency with the switch.
Tip: turn Travel Mode on before you leave, while you still have Wi-Fi, so the rate is already on your phone when you land.
Give the trip its own budget
A calendar month is the wrong unit for a holiday. A ten-day trip often crosses a month boundary, and the question you ask each evening is "how much is left per day?" Pocket Clear's Pro Trips answer that:
- Set a name, start date, end date and optional budget in Settings › Travel Mode › Trip. A trip is separate from the travel currency, so a trip in your own country works too.
- While the trip runs, Home, Reports and All Transactions show the trip instead of the month: what you've spent against the trip budget, and what's left per remaining day.
- Everything you log is marked as part of the trip. You can switch the mark off for anything that isn't trip spending.
- A "logged at home" line keeps rent and subscriptions that fired while you were away visible.

The awkward cases
Cash from an ATM
Withdrawing cash isn't spending. Spending it is. The most accurate habit is to log each cash purchase as you make it, in local currency. If that's too fiddly for small street-food purchases, log a single "cash: food" entry at the end of each day for what you remember. Imperfect daily entries beat a perfect plan you abandon.
Card fees and the rate your bank actually uses
The amount you log at the counter won't exactly match your card statement. Banks apply their own exchange rate and may add a foreign transaction fee or ATM fee. Don't try to fix every line. When the statement arrives, log any fees as one separate expense ("bank fees, Lisbon trip"). If you want to see what the trip really cost, edit the few big items like the hotel or flights to match the statement.
Several countries on one trip
Change the travel currency once, when you cross the border, not per transaction. In Pocket Clear, tap the ✈ icon and pick the new currency. Entries you already logged are unaffected, because they were saved in your home currency.
Costs shared with friends
If one person pays for the apartment and another pays for dinners, keep a shared record of who paid what. Pocket Clear's group expenses (Pro, with Cloud Sync on) keep amounts in the currency actually paid, work out who owes whom, and add only your share to your own spending at the end. - Type the receipt amount exactly. Don't round or convert.
- Set the currency once per country, not once per purchase.
- Check "left per day" each evening. It's one number, and it changes tomorrow's plans more than a category chart does.
- Don't chase exchange-rate wobble. A consistent rate applied automatically is better for budgeting than a perfect rate you calculated once by hand.
If you're on the free plan
Travel Mode and Trips are part of Pro. On the free plan you can still track a trip well: log each expense in your home currency using the amount from your card app or a quick conversion, and create a temporary "Travel" category so the trip total is easy to read.
