Manage Categories

Categories are the backbone of your expense tracking. Every transaction you log gets assigned to a category — Food, Transport, Shopping, Bills, and so on. Pocket Clear comes with a set of sensible defaults, but you can fully customize the list to match how you actually spend.

You can add new categories, rename existing ones, change their icons, reorder them to put your most-used categories first, and delete ones you never use. Categories appear in the transaction form when you log an expense, and they power your category breakdown on the Home screen and in reports.

Deleting a category does not delete any transactions that were assigned to it. Those transactions will simply show as "Uncategorized" until you reassign them. Your data is always safe.

How to manage categories

  1. Open Pocket Clear and tap Settings (gear icon).
  2. Tap Manage Categories.
  3. To add a category, tap the "+" button at the bottom of the list. Enter a name and choose an icon.
  4. To edit a category, tap on it to change the name or icon.
  5. To reorder, long-press and drag a category to your preferred position.
  6. To delete, swipe left on a category and confirm. Existing transactions will become uncategorized.

Default categories

When you first install Pocket Clear, you start with these categories: Food, Transport, Shopping, Bills, Entertainment, Health, Education, and Other. You can rename, reorder, or delete any of them.

Subcategories

For finer organization, you can add subcategories beneath any category — for example "Groceries" and "Restaurants" under Food, or "Fuel" and "Parking" under Transport. When a transaction has a subcategory, it appears in your lists as "Category · Subcategory", giving you more detail without cluttering the main category list. Open a category from Manage Categories to add, rename, reorder, or remove its subcategories. As with categories, deleting a subcategory never deletes the transactions assigned to it.
